Constructed in 1926, 1000 Broadway originally served as a showroom for the Chrysler Corporation. In 1971, Jerry Gart purchased the building and turned it into a ski and sports retail store, earning it the affectionate nickname “Sports Castle.” The building has sat largely vacant since 2016, when Gart Sports merged with Sports Authority and stores closed nationwide. Plans are being developed to revitalize the building as a new retail destination and regional hub for a sports equipment retailer, Evo.
